It is a real desktop application rather than a website in a frame. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and talks to whatever mailbox you already have over IMAP and SMTP, so there is nothing to migrate and no provider to leave.
Your mail is cached and indexed on your own machine, and searching it does not send it anywhere. That is a property of where the software runs rather than a promise about how we behave.
What the account adds is the half a program on your laptop cannot do for itself: the same settings and the same identity on every operating system it runs on, and a plan whose limits are the rows the software actually checks.
